Economists call this The Tragedy of The Commons – the tension between short-term benefit for the individual versus the long-term interest of the group. This conflict is at the core of many our most serious problems - climate change, pollution, resource depletion, over-population.
However for most of us it's hard to put the future ahead of the present. As Groucho Marx put it, "What do I care about future generations? What have they ever done for me?" Yet, global problems can't be solved with technology alone - they require behavioral change. But how can we change behavior when self-interest so easily trumps cooperation?
